I chose Marywood because Marywood at first glance had such a beautiful campus that, though small, was so beautiful I couldn’t pass it up. I transferred from another nearby college (Lackawanna), and I was used to the small campus, so it felt like home right off the bat. There was also the fact that I live in Scranton, and this being the only school with a devoted art program in the area, I couldn’t say no! I’m not straight out of high school either, so having classes a little ways away from work was really important to me.

I am majoring in Art because its the perfect fit. The tldr is that I love art and live thinking about it constantly. I want to tell stories and leave a mark in people’s hearts with what I have to say through my work. I tried going to work and just doing that out of high school, but I was miserable. I always ended up with jobs I hated in an attempt to just make money. So I decided to get back to my roots of art and doing something with that. I’ve never looked back!

When I’m not in class, I’m doing so many things! I have a very full schedule, so I’m always trying to get a million things done. I do at least 3 pages of drawings a day, I write, I love to read, I love comics and fantasy books. I’m also always trying to keep my visual library full, a term I learned from another artist known as Jake Parker. If I’m relaxing, it’s a rare time for me haha!

My favorite art class so far was… well, I’ve only had a few, but two have really stuck out to me. Painting I with Steven Alexander was awesome because I learned a lot about how colors interact with one another in real life. He was such a patient teacher too so I loved that. Visual Concepts was another great one! We had such great projects there and John Meza taught me how to come up with ideas and develop them into finalized pieces. I loved coming to class to see what we would learn next!

The coolest thing I’ve done at Marywood so far was I designed a book cover for the Little Prince with the CMYKlub last semester. It was a lot of fun because I felt like I got to use all the things I had learned in my other classes into a project outside of class!

When I graduate I want to go for my masters degree, though admittedly I never know in what and I change it constantly! I know I have plenty of time though, and I want to definitely get a chance to work in the industry as well. Perhaps get into concept art or book illustrations? I feel like the world is my oyster.

I’d recommend the Art program at Marywood because I think with all the small classes, I’m learning so much. All my teachers are kind and willing to help individually, and they all have experience in the fields I’m interested in!
