I chose Marywood because of the atmosphere this campus and the people bring to it. When I first visited this campus, I fell in love with the projects of other Graphic Design students that were pinned all around the walls. Later on in the tour I was shown the work spaces that students are given, and the rooms have big windows and great views, and I felt that if I worked hard I could have an office space like that where I wouldn’t mind spending an entire day and just taking my college life in while I still have it. Marywood gives me the motivation I need to work hard and seriously consider every possibility for an amazing future.
I am majoring in Art because I always wanted to show those who didn’t believe that you could have a career in art that it’s possible. Doing something I love and putting a bit of myself into what I do is why art is such a special part of my life. No matter what I do in life art will always be a part of it; it’s a sort of escape for me when I’m going through a hard time. Having a career in art is a goal I am looking forward to having for a long time.
When I’m not in class, I’m honesty either hammocking or biking. I love to spend my time outside, especially during the fall and spring seasons. Keeping busy is a must for me. I enjoy taking the little time when I’m not in class or studying to take in the scenery all around here by walking around campus because it will be over in a few years.
So far, my favorite art class at Marywood is Typography with Professor Chris Medley. Although I only started this class a few weeks ago, we write a single word every day on a scrap piece of paper and hang it up on the wall. I can see myself improving on how I design my letters each day, and have no clue where this spark of creativity came from. I’m working really hard when I am in my typography class and I am able to put myself and my creative aspects into my own projects. The projects are loosely given so there’s a lot of space for me to use the colors and shapes of my choosing in my designs and I always try to show the best of myself in these projects.
The coolest thing I’ve done at Marywood so far was going on the awesome bus trips they offer! Each semester the art department offers a trip to a well known art museum in New York City or Philadelphia, and it’s foolish not to go on them. My favorite last year was visiting the MET in New York, and I plan to visit it every year, so one day I can say I’ve seen the entire museum.
When I graduate I want to have an idea of what my life is going to look like. When I think of a job sometimes I want to be a video game designer, but I want to get more involved in my liberal arts core classes first to figure out what is best for me and what will make me the happiest.
I’d recommend the Art program at Marywood because I always felt that I got the 1-on-1 experience I needed to be able to get through some difficult projects. Although I may seem outgoing, class is a time when I struggle with communicating. Marywood has made that easier for me and I would recommend anyone who loves smaller class sizes and hands on experiences to take on the art program offered at Marywood.
