Hannah Docalovich (Class of 2019)
Blogger Role: Photography
Major: Photography
I chose Marywood because I heard from others that Marywood was a very nice school and has a very good art program. I also joined because I was looking to continue my softball career in college and was lucky enough to be recruited to play at Marywood.
I am majoring in Art because since I was in middle school art has had a great impact on me. At first, I didn’t realize photography was where I was going to end up, but once I hit high school I realized that I wanted to be a photographer for the rest of my life.
When I’m not in class, I’m either playing softball for the Marywood softball team, taking photographs for my classes, or if I find the time I’m usually reading.
My favorite art classes so far were all the film classes that I took in high school and Marywood. There’s just a fantastic uniqueness that film provides for photographers because it takes us back to when photography was more complex than just taking a digital camera and shooting everything you see without thinking about the composition.
The coolest thing I’ve done at Marywood so far was to be able to learn how to use a 4×5 film camera. It was very difficult how to learn how to use it because it involved using a light meter to calculate how long you should expose the piece of film and the aperture.
When I graduate I plan to start off with any photography job that I can find. Once I’ve gained enough experience within my field, I plan to master my photography skills so I may become a photographer for National Geographic.
I’d recommend the Art program at Marywood because there are so many mediums that a student can major in within the Art program. Every professor realizes what your strengths and weaknesses are and helps you strengthen those weaknesses so you can become a better artist not just within your major, but within all the mediums that are offered in the Art program.
