I chose Marywood because it’s not far from home, and that it offered everything I was looking for in a school. It has less distractions, its a great campus, and the people here are just wonderful. I play soccer and Marywood was one of the few schools that has a really great art program and offered me the chance to play soccer as well.
I am majoring in Art because it’s what I love to do. There’s a certain satisfaction and contentment that I get from drawing that I don’t get from anything else. Drawing is the only thing I can do that my mind doesn’t wander when I’m doing it. I think art is one of nature’s natural therapies that I’ve been blessed with as a career.
When I’m not in class, I’m usually somewhere practicing hand lettering or playing soccer. Soccer is another passion of mine. I was exposed to the game at a very early age and it’s stuck with since me then. Before I decided to take up art as a career I thought I was going to be a professional soccer player. Soccer has taught me things that I would have never learned from being an artist, and for that I’m very grateful.
My favorite art class so far was my Graphic Design class, mainly because it’s my major but also I feel very at home in that class, and I think I flourish the most in it as well. I also enjoyed all my art related classes because they’ve all helped influenced my art and how I approach each project.
The coolest thing I’ve done at Marywood so far was last semester (Fall 2016) I painted a mural with another classmate in Marywood’s Learning Commons! Students who saw me working on it complemented it and it felt really cool knowing that I was making something that was going to influence other people. Another exciting project that I worked on along with other Marywood students was an art exhibit entitled “Genesis.” It was a huge success and gave our art lots of exposure.
When I graduate I want to move to Seattle or San Francisco and open a design studio of my own, but I see myself working as an apparel designer at a company like Urban Outfitters or possibly for Google before then. I know it’s a long shot but I’m willing to put in the work and take advantage of any opportunity I’m given.
I’d recommend the Art program at Marywood because because I feel like it’s one of the best programs out there. One of the advantages of Marywood’s Art program it’s the personal relationship you have with the teachers. I particularly enjoy this because I get a chance to not only know my teachers but to pick their brain on so many different things that I am learning about. I mean if you’re looking for a school where your focus is on your education and improving yourself as an artist, I think Marywood is your school.
