Meghan Welcyng (Class of 2019)

Blogger Role: Photography

Major: Graphic Design

I chose Marywood because Marywood is a small school that has a great community. This was one of the primary reasons as to why I was interested in Marywood. Their art program also stood out to me as it offered a wide variety of classes and majors.

I am majoring in Art because I’ve always enjoyed art. Even as a little girl, I’d break out the finger paints and have the time of my life. It has been and continues to be what I enjoy doing most.

When I’m not in class, I enjoy a wide variety of activities outside of class. I love the outdoors and doings things like hiking, camping, fishing, and other similar activities. I love to do art and experiment with different styles and mediums. I enjoy hanging out with friends, relaxing with a book or watching Netflix. Currently, I am exploring the city of Florence, Italy while not in class.

My favorite art class so far was… It’s hard to choose a favorite art class. I’ve enjoyed all of my graphic design classes so far, but if I had to choose one, it would be Graphic Design II with Steven Brower. This was probably my favorite so far because of the projects we focused on. These projects were different from anything else we had done prior to the class and really focused on the different kinds of graphic design jobs we could have in the future.

The coolest thing I’ve done at Marywood so far was that I had an opportunity within my fall semester to put on an art show with a group of amazing artists. It was a great experience to work with each individual while learning how to set up a show that best expressed each of our personalities.

When I graduate I hope to go work for a graphic design studio. I have found it difficult to choose a specific aspect within graphic design that I enjoy most so far. Being a part of a studio would allow me to work in multiple areas. After working for someone else for a few years, I’d like to start my own business. I also hope to one day live either by the ocean somewhere along the east coast or somewhere in the mountains up in the Adirondacks.

I’d recommend the Art program at Marywood because Marywood’s art program offers so many opportunities to the students. These opportunities include a variety of clubs to choose from, getting your work displayed in local galleries, trips to museums, and different options for going abroad. Professors and staff are very supportive of the students and the small ratio of students to professors gives each professor the capability to give individual critical feedback on students’ work as well as any help the student may need.
