Nicole Sobolewski (Class of 2020)

Blogger Role: Art History

Major: English Literature, History, and Art History

I chose Marywood because it has a smaller school environment, and it is a Catholic college. One of my high school English teachers told me that smaller colleges provide a better chance to get to know teachers, being able to create personal connections and to gain more from them. I also chose Marywood because of its Catholic foundations. Since I come from a very religious family, I thought it would be cool to study at a Catholic college.

I am majoring in Art because I love it. The thing about Art History is that there’s always something to discover. One artwork, from any era, can be seen through a variety of lenses/perspectives and have multiple meanings. It can deal with history, social issues, religion, morality, literature and so much more. Each work of art reveals something about the world, which is one of the things I admire about this field.

When I’m not in class, I’m studying, watching Netflix, and sleeping. I really enjoy school, so I like doing homework and studying (unless I feel overwhelmed with work, then it becomes stressful). Also, I usually watch Netflix because the tv shows/movies on it are awesome, and watching tv helps me relax.

My favorite art class so far was all of the art history classes I have completed so far. I can’t pick one because each of them are special to me. Within my first two survey classes, History of Art I and II , with Dr. Irwin, I discovered that I have an interest in Art History. Not only did I find a hidden passion, but I also found areas within the field that I love (Medieval and Renaissance Art)! Another one of my favorite classes was History of Printmaking with Dr. Irwin. Before this class, I had no idea what printmaking was. Now I have a basic concept about the process, and I know about many talented artists who have fantastic prints. [I totally recommend taking these classes (to any majors), they were phenomenal.]

The coolest thing I’ve done at Marywood so far was discovering my interests, and what I am passionate about. When I first came to Marywood, I started off as a Biology major. Not that science isn’t fascinating, I just realized that literature, history, and art are subjects that speak out to me. Marywood, with its teachers and classes, has helped me grow as a person and uncover topics that I’m passionate about (even some that I didn’t know I had).

When I graduate I hope to find a career within a field I love. Currently, I’m unsure of the career path I would like to take, whether it will be in English, History, or Art History. However, I think I will be leaning towards a career in academics or research, which will allow me to continuously learn.

I’d recommend the Art program at Marywood because it is an amazing program. The art teachers at Marywood are all passionate about what they teach, and have so much to offer. I’ve never met an art teacher that hasn’t helped me in some way. Additionally, the classes that are offered here are very fascinating.
