I chose Marywood because I come from a small town in Washington State and a majority of high school graduates end up attending some of the same schools. I wanted to break the mold and experience something new and exciting while stepping out of my comfort zone. I was also looking for very specific things in a school a Catholic university so that I could strengthen my faith, a DIII NCAA school so that I could keep running, an accredited Graphic Design program, and a relatively small campus so that I could form personal relationships with students, faculty, and staff. Marywood looked like and has been the perfect fit.
I am majoring in Art because I am able to express myself and my emotions in many ways. Art is also essential to communication and I want to be able to brand and advertise for non-profits, awareness campaigns, and social issues that convey the values that I stand for and believe in.
When I’m not in class, I keep myself busy with a pretty full schedule. I’m either running for the Marywood cross country and track and field teams, and working both at the tutoring center and Target. When I do have a time gap in my schedule I try to fill it by volunteering, spending time with my friends, or spending time to focus on self-care which is very important to me as well.
So far, my favorite art class at Marywood has been printmaking. It was relieving to be away from the computer and still be able to create meaningful art. Although I’m not taking any printmaking classes this semester I hope that being the Printmaking blogger will motivate me to step away from the computer every once in a while and enhance my creativity by using different mediums.
The coolest thing I’ve done at Marywood so far was apply to be part of an Alternative Break Service Trip through Campus Ministry. I will be going to Denver, CO during spring break and I can’t wait.
When I graduate I want to work for a Certified B Corporation because these companies use their business for good. I have a passion for service and being able to combine my job with serving others and the world is my biggest goal. I would also like to keep learning and experimenting with different media so that I can keep exercising my creativity.
I’d recommend the Art program at Marywood because the professors are all very knowledgeable. They all make themselves available for you and help you push your designs further than what you thought they could be. Students also have 24 hour access to the art buildings. Sometimes it can be hard to find the motivation and inspiration that you need to start or finish a project. Having the art buildings available to you at all times is very convenient. This has especially been helpful for me because I don’t have my own computer yet.
