MAHADY GALLERY: Centering Life + Art – 100 Years. M.C. Richards, September 10, 2016 – October 26, 2016
GALLERY TALK: The Pivotal Moment of Black Mountain College and Contemporary Art, September 21st, 2016 at 3pm
The art galleries at Marywood always host a wide variety of talented artists and next week is no exception. The first exhibit for the new fall semester in 2016 will open in the Mahady Gallery on September 10 and runs through October 26. This exhibition, entitled Centering Life + Art – 100 Years. M.C. Richards, will focus on the works of M. C. Richards, also known as Mary Caroline Richards, who spent her life as a potter, poet, painter, educator, author, and translator. By having a vast background in the arts, M. C. Richard’s is able to blend her passions together. Examining her pottery you can tell that she embodied her passions into her work. To start a piece of pottery on the wheel one must start by centering. Without a perfect center the clay will collapse. A piece of ceramics depends solely on the center. Similarly, M.C. Richards depends on her passions in life. To her being a potter, poet, painter, educator, author, and translator; those were the center of her life. From there she was shaped into the person she became. Just like a piece of pottery people are transformed and shaped, but they all started with the center.
While you are in between classes or if you want to appreciate wonderful art just for the joy of it, stop by the Mahady Gallery from September 10 to October 26, 2016 to learn more about the works by M.C. Richards. You may have never heard of her, but perhaps it’s time to learn.
The exhibition is curated by Julia Connor and Alice Sebrell and organized by the Black Mountain College. Later in the month, September 21st at 3pm, there will be a gallery talk entitled The Pivotal Moment of Black Mountain College and Contemporary Art. Make sure to mark your calendars for the event.
