Creating Characters

I am well into my third semester at Marywood University. I am an Illustration major, and I study within the Marywood Art Department. That said, I am currently enrolled in a Character Design class.

So far in the class I learned about Human anatomy, fundamentals of character design, and various design techniques. For our most recent assignment, we were assigned the task to write out a description for our own original character. Once our description was approved, we were then given the task to illustrate our own character. Afterwards, our professor added a creative twist to the assignment. We then were presented with the description of another student’s character. The student was left anonymous. Furthermore, we had to design a concept for his or her character on the description alone. For the critique, the author of each character description was revealed. Also, new were presented with both illustrations of each character.

My Original Character Description:

Plaque Doctor: Apart from the bird-like plaque doctor mask, he is far from you average plaque doctor. His raggedy trench coat is cut art the sleeves, revealing his mutilated arms– covered in bandages oozing with the medicine he injects himself with. He tests his newest medical concoctions on himself… some of them were failures. Par of the consequence is his glowing purple eyes– a side effect from the countless self-injections. He holster his needles around his belt: which holds up his tattered pants. His boots and gloves are dirty. Almost as if he dug himself out of the grave. He finds pleasure in caring a bell around the cemetery. Misleading whomever is trying to save those who were mistakenly buried alive.

Colors: Black, gray, brown, purple.

Physical features: Average size.

Anonymous Character Description:

4’11” round faced child, with a wide unblinking stare. Always wears her hair in pigtails, and is spotted playing outside in the woods. Hikers will often report seeing a child alone in these same woods. In these reports, it is almost always mentioned that she is holding a living rabbit. She has never been spotted outside of the woods. From the state of her tattered clothes she hasn’t been home in a long, long time. No one seems to be looking for her. But from the looks of her wandering around, she’s looking for someone, or something.

WRAP UP:

Overall this assignment was a phenomenal experience. I valued the opportunity to work on something original. Also, I enjoyed “creative problem solving” by illustration a classmate’s character description.
