Designing an Instagram Campaign

Hey guys! Bit of a shorter post this week but I’d like to walk you guys through my thoughts while designing one of my recent projects, an Instagram Social Justice Campaign. So for this project we were tasked with designing a swipeable social justice marketing campaign for Instagram comprising a set of 10 sequenced graphics on a social, justice, advocacy, or environmental issue of your choice. I chose to do mine about mental health, and I had heard in the past that Houseplants can have a positive impact on mental health so I wanted to explore that correlation in this project.

I started with research, gathering studies and articles discussing how houseplants can positively influence mental well-being. I then simplified and organized that information to fit within a ten-panel format that would be engaging and easy to follow.

Next, I focused on color scheme and composition. Drawing inspiration from the branding of two “companies” I imagined collaborating on this campaign, I developed a palette of oranges, yellows, and greens. These tones felt warm, calming, and inviting, reflecting the message of mindfulness and care. To create a sense of cohesion and flow, I incorporated a continuous wavy line that guided the viewer’s eye across all ten slides, and designed plant graphics that extended across panel edges to connect the sequence visually.

This project challenged me to think about narrative and rhythm in visual design, how each panel contributes to the whole and how movement can lead the viewer through an experience. Because of the formatting of the final project, it encouraged me to value different principals of the design that I would normally not have focused on as much. Balancing unity, clarity, and visual appeal was a challenge, but ultimately, I’m proud of how the campaign came together and the perspective it gave me on visual storytelling for advocacy.
