Today I wanted to share and talk about one of my favorite animated series of all time: Puella Magi Madoka Magica. The story follows a group of middle school girls who have the power to transform into magical girls. They gain this power in exchange for having any wish they want granted. They then utilize their power to fight creatures born from negative emotions: Witches. This series is full of cuteness and great times…And it definitely is just cuteness and great times…definitely…I wont say anymore though because I believe it’s something that should be viewed with not knowing much about it.

I could go on and on about this series and its greatness from a story point-of-view, but that’s not what I’m here to talk about today. This series follows two distinct art styles: A more traditional, anime art style using thick lines and then a collage-like art style when it comes to the appearance of witches and their labyrinths.
In the series, you’ll know when a witch appears when the environment around the characters turns from a city background to one that has lots of texture, movement, surrealism, and whimsy. Each witch has their own labyrinth, usually centered around the theme of the witch and the type of power they possess. It also includes other things but…you’ll have to watch it to find out. (Which you 100% should do).

This series has quickly taken over my interest and I have a feeling it’s going to hold it for quite some time. Recently announced, a new movie for the series will be released in Japan on August 28, 2026 with a release date for the US to be determined.
When the time comes and the movie releases, I can 100% guarantee you that I will be writing a post on it!
This art of this series is definitely one where it takes you a few episodes to warm up to the art style and then it quickly pulls you in.
As a little bonus, I thought I would include some of the fan art I’ve been working on!

Please do go check out this series and give it a try!
Thanks for reading and I hope you look forward to my next post!
