For the past week I’ve had the opportunity to work hands on with our government archives. Needless to say, I’ve learned a great deal about Virgin Islands and Caribbean history because of this. The archives are currently being housed at the Enid Baa Library on “main street” in downtown Charlotte Amalie on St.Thomas. While working with these records I found many photos of what main street and the downtown area looked like many years ago. So I took the opportunity to walk around just to see the similarities and differences. Years ago downtown and Main Street was more of a residential area. Today downtown has changed a great deal, however main street has remained pretty much the same. Many of the buildings on Main Street can be considered historic buildings, they’ve been standing for so long! I did some research and found that in downtown and on Main Street there are over 300 stores where visitors can shop. St. Thomas has been known as one of the best duty free shopping ports in the Caribbean. You can find just about anything on Main Street. From perfumes to fine jewelry, clothing to souvenirs. Whether you are coming by cruise ship or by air, you’ll find great deals guaranteed.
So if you ever get the chance to visit, stop by the Enid Baa Library for a bit then make your way downtown too! You won’t be disappointed!
