Ongoing Art To Do’s

Hi everyone! This week, I want to talk about some personal art projects I’ve been meaning to try but haven’t gotten around to yet. I always have a list of materials or concepts in my head that would be fun or give cool results, but sometimes, it gets put on the back burner for my art classes. Over the summer, I plan to take action on many of these ideas, but for now, I’ll let you all in on some of my visions.

One of the first things I’ve wanted to try is painting on glass. I’ve always wanted to experiment with this, but recently, a friend gave me a sheet of glass from a picture frame that she broke, and I’ve been thinking of how I could use it. I haven’t searched for much inspiration yet, but I think it would be interesting to make something where certain elements weren’t painted so that changing what’s behind the glass would change the appearance of those elements. I haven’t given it much thought, but I want to try it.

Next, I want to try to sketch more. Believe it or not, I don’t like drawing that much. I prefer ink over graphite, but I’m still much better with a paintbrush than a writing instrument. I avoid drawing because I don’t think I’m good at it, but it would be great to improve in for sketching out projects and things like that. With that, participating in drawing challenges would be something good for me, things like Inktober, where there is a new drawing challenge for each day of October, usually just a word to inspire whatever kind of ink drawing you want within the challenge. I’ve tried to do similar challenges, but I never stick to them. I hope to try again soon.

Another thing I’ve been wanting to try is jewelry making. I’ve had an extensive crystal collection for a few years and would love to incorporate that in some jewelry. I enrolled in Jewelry Metal I next semester, so I’ll get to experiment with some ideas soon. I’m interested in wire wrapping but also want to make jewelry from unconventional items. I’ve never been super outgoing with my jewelry, but trying to create unique designs would probably make me want to experiment with my jewelry choices.

The last idea I want to talk about is something I used to do in high school to prepare for my AP Art Exam. I used to make aesthetic pages of my research, experimentations, plans, or explanations behind projects. The idea of an artistic journal that documents the process of an entire project is so interesting, especially with the type of projects I’ve been doing throughout my college classes; the pages would be so full. I have some of my pages from high school to show you and the finished projects that followed them. It adds an extra layer of fulfillment when you can visually see the process from start to finish, even after reaching the final result.

Well, I’m writing this on Easter, so I’m going to go watch my niece hunt for easter eggs, but I hope you enjoyed this week’s post. Comment below if you have any projects or ideas you’ve been meaning to try but haven’t gotten around to yet! Have a good week, everyone, and I hope you had a good Easter if you celebrate 🙂
