Painting a problem!

Hi friends! I hope everyone is doing great and enjoying the last few weeks of the semester!

This week, in my History & Theory of Art Therapy, our class learned about Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in collaboration with Art Therapy. In response to this week’s work, we individually created a piece of art representing a problem we are having in our personal lives; one that we are struggling to solve. We were instructed to create an image of that problem as it is. Then, we were told to write 2-3 sentences describing the problem. Next, we were to put the image away for three days. After that, we were instructed to create another image of the problem, but this time with it being solved. Again, we were told to write 2-3 sentences reflecting on how it feels to have it solved as well as any new insight/thoughts/feelings about the problem, having taken some time away from the initial image.

I decided to use watercolor on Bristol paper to paint a problem that I’ve currently been facing, that problem being fear. I depicted that fearful feeling as a blue and purple swirl. I wrote down my sentences, and put my piece away. Three days later, I created a piece of what I imagine not having this fear would feel like. It’s a soft, blissful feeling. The painting is of red and yellow clouds, like a sunset. I again wrote down my sentences, and then compared the two pieces.

I felt a great sense of relief when I completed this directive. Painting a solved problem was so freeing, and I would truly recommend this experience to anyone who is interested.

That’s all for today, friends! I hope you enjoyed reading!

Side note: come see the Where Creativity Works 10 Year Anniversary gallery in Insalaco! It is a GORGEOUS collection of artwork by some very talented artists! The work is on view through Jan 14, 2026.
