Summer is a great time to work on taking your portfolio to that next level. With internships around the corner and downtime to spare (at least more than we have during school months) now is the time to fix up those portfolios. It is important, further in life, that you create a portfolio that is updated and can stand out from the rest. Below are a few tips I have heard and used over the years to help me on my way to building my best portfolio.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help
There are so many people out there that are more than willing to help you out. Not only can you receive professional opinions from your professors, but even your friends and family can help you out when it comes to their opinions on pieces. Ask!
Stand out
Try to find those out of the ordinary pieces that would compare to no one else, and that make you stand out as an individual and artist.
Get professional
This goes two ways. Make sure you not only buy a professional, clean looking portfolio case to hold your pieces, but be professional yourself. It is important to know how to talk about your pieces with art specific language. Remember those elements and principles of art and design!
Highlight and Organize
Not only is it crucial to stand out, you also want to make sure that every single one of your pieces caters to YOU. This portfolio is selling yourself and your individuality, so make sure to highlight your best pieces and organize them in a way that would make sense to your potential customer, school, employer, etc.
Always be prepared
You never know when someone could want to check out your portfolio, so always have it ready. You can even use websites like behance.net to enable an easier route to accessing your great artwork.
