Welcome back to another artist spotlight! Is it just me or has March just flown by this year? It might have just been the result of Spring break, but who knows?! Despite time flying, I have had the opportunity discover a new insightful artist to share with everyone. I enjoy the heavier and more realistic topics she touches on whilst introducing these surreal elements within her works. If you enjoy more horror influenced art, you can find more of her works and portfolio on her website. This week’s artist is…
Ana Fiedler
Major: Art Administration
Minor: Illustration
Year: 2027
Clubs: N/A

I am majoring in Art Administration because…
I wanted to be practical about my major while also sticking with what I love, it being art. I wasn’t sure what art administration was until I learned more about it when I wanted to switch my major last year, but as soon as I found out about it I thought it would be a perfect fit for me and my goals in life! With Arts Administration I can surround myself with art and artists, be around museums or galleries. As much as I would love to create art for a living, I’m aware of the challenges that come with it and the potential unstable financial/job security. Which was why Arts Administration felt more in line with my life plans and wanting job stability.
My favorite aspect of art administration is…
getting a lot of hands-on art classes and experiences as well as getting the business aspect. I think it’s important, for any major, to take a few business classes, not only will it help your career but it can help you out in life. And again, just the idea of being able to surround myself with art and fellow artists as my job sounds amazing to me. I genuinely cannot imagine not doing something involving art as my career.

Art Administration is important because…
someone has to set up the galleries. Art will never not be important though, whether that’s being a curator, writing grants, or having your own gallery, you’ll need an Art Administrator. And more than that, as with any art major, art is a fundamental part of society. In my very biased opinion, art is more than the person creating it, or the creation itself. It’s finding artists to display their art, it’s having a safe space for people to express themselves, it’s an outlet for a lot of people. Any type of art/art major, including arts administration, is important and integral to how a lot of people in our society function.

My favorite art and business class so far has been…
2Dimensional and Design with Prof. Georisell Vasquez I really liked the projects and learning more about the elements of art. I learned a lot about composition and color theory in that class; it was my first art class out of high school and it was a really great experience and an important foundation class that really helped me with my personal projects. My favorite business class so far has been Accounting I with Prof. Theodocia Zayac, the professor was amazing and the subject was surprisingly interesting to learn about. I found myself using what I learned, or pieces of it, to help me during my internship.
When I’m not in class…
I’m usually working on my own projects, it’s rare nowadays for me to not constantly be drawing and working on personal projects as often as I’m able. As soon as I finish one, another one gets started, I find it very hard to stop drawing even if it’s just for a day or two. Depending on how much downtime I know I’ll have I might start a new book, work more hours at my job, or play video games.

Ideally I’d like to work at an art gallery, but I don’t have a set job in mind yet. I just know that I want to work at a gallery and be involved in the process of setting them up! I really want to be around art in any way possible though.
The coolest thing I have done at Marywood with my major was…
get to do an internship with a small gallery located in Montrose, PA, and being able to get hands-on experience early on. Seeing how the gallery operated on a curator and physical level was really cool to get to see and be a part of. I was really excited that, given my major, I was able to get my foot in the door almost immediately. I haven’t been there long but the few times I helped out really let me get a look at what my future could look like as an art administrator.

My dream career location would be…
somewhere in Europe, maybe Florence, Italy doing…. Making my own art, as much as I love/will love working at more galleries in the future, what I really want to do is just make and sell my own art for a living. My absolute dream job of dream jobs is having my own art up on gallery walls at some point in my life.

I hope you all enjoyed Ana’s artwork! Her work stood out to me with her use of surrealistic elements of unexpected and dreamlike compositions and the self portraits she has created. If you’re a fan of horror/thriller aesthetics, Ana’s work definitely speaks to that style and genre. I’m always taken aback with her new works as they all have their own impact, but her artistic style still shines through. Have a great day and will see ya’ll in my next post, adieu!
