Student Spotlight: Ella Peplowski

Welcome back! I hope everyone is having a relaxing break so far and finishing up those last New Year’s Resolutions. One of my resolutions was to be more engaged on campus this year and this blog allowed me to be more creative in writing and engaging with other students. This week’s artist introduces us to an artist I met during some of my foundational art courses and she caught my eye with how refined her projects always turned out during our critiques. This refined artist is…

Ella Peplowski

Major: Graphic Design

Minor: N/A

Year: 2027

Clubs: N/A

I am majoring in Art because

it is something that I have always loved and the fact that I can make a career out of it makes me so excited. I love how art is very expressive and there are so many different aspects to it. I love making pieces that are my style and here at Marywood I really feel like I’m starting to find my style more and more. If I can make an impact in the world with my art, that would be the ultimate goal and I hope that I can inspire others as well.

What excites me most about art is…

the limitless possibilities and so many ways to approach it. You can create practically anything and call it a piece of art, and no one can tell you otherwise. My love for art has grown even more since studying at Marywood.

The kinds of things that inspire me are…

the music I listen to, along with my surroundings and interests. My surroundings helped me to choose creative subjects for my Basic Drawing class with Prof. Kevin O’Neill last fall. I also love country music and that has definitely influenced a few projects. An example of that is how I incorporated the song “Life is a Highway” by the Rascal Flatts into a metaphor for Prof. John Meza’s Conceptual Design class. I used the song to create a visual that demonstrates the metaphor that life really is like a highway. I also created a rodeo phone case collection in Prof. Sue Jenkins’ Digital Design class!

My favorite art class so far has been…

Introduction to Typography with Prof. Chris Medley. This class really showed me that working with typography in graphic design is exactly what I want to do in my future and it made me so excited. The projects in this class were so fun and we even got to work in the printmaking room a bit. It makes me happy because I am planning to minor in printmaking as well.

When I am not in class…

you can find me hanging out with my friends/roommates, at the gym, or doodling on any piece of paper I can find. I love to workout, and creating little artworks and doodles rather than big projects keeps me busy and happy when I have nothing to work on.

The coolest thing I have done at Marywood so far was…

definitely playing around in the printmaking room for a few projects in Chris Medley’s class. Have I mentioned how much I love it? I find that whole room so cool and being able to create physical images with a roller and ink is so interesting and exciting.

When I graduate…

I plan to use my Graphic Design degree to hopefully work on most things involving typography. I hope to be designing logos, creating posters and all things like that.

My favorite snack to munch on during the holidays would be…

Christmas cookies and a whole lot of dark chocolate. Even better if it is paired with hot cocoa!

I hope you all enjoyed the variety of works Ella created as much as I have. I particularly liked the musical metaphor for creating a good visual that represented her music style as well as her refined style and the lamp drawing for it’s dynamic shapes and values. Have a Merry Christmas and what are your New Year’s Resolutions? Aloha!
