Welcome back to another artist spotlight! This week’s artist caught my eye in our Three Dimensional & Design class with and viewing her work out in the halls for her Digital Design class with her creative final pieces. From her dynamic sculptures to her vibrant drawings, this artist is…

I am majoring in art because…
Growing up surrounded by art has always had a major influence on my life. I grew up in Philadelphia, the mural capital of the United States, so I would always pass gigantic pieces of art, mosaics, and street performances in my daily life. This was also combined with the fact that I grew up in a prime era of cartoons airing at the time like Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Amazing World of Gumball… I was obsessed with all of it. Thankfully, my parents nurtured my love for art. These interests acted as outlets for me to express my creativity and pursue what I truly love: sharing my art across many mediums (mainly focusing digitally and with graphite) with others who are also passionate about it online.
The kinds of thing(s) that inspire me is…
through nerd culture. My favorite shows, movies, comics, books, music, and more all somehow find their way into my artwork. It’s been a large part of my life ever since I was young, and I have been engaging in the heart of the community for years, attending comic conventions every year. Getting to talk to fellow fans, creators, and people who are just as passionate as I am about the things I love (as well as expressing my love through cosplay, my main hobby!) fuels my inspiration and gets me to create not just for myself but for the community.

My favorite art class so far has been…
no particular one in mind, but I love how hands on we can get in all of our art class. We are allowed to have complete creative control over what we create as long as it falls within the guidelines of the assignment, and it’s very freeing to be allowed that after years of high school art classes full of ‘’you must do this, and then that”. If I had to choose, however, I would most likely pick my graphic design classes as that’s the subsection of art that I feel as though I completely excel in.

When I’m not in class…
I can always be found reading comics, watching movies, listening to music, drawing, or shopping. I draw my main inspiration from the things that I love so I’m always observing different designs, colors, styles, and more when I am digesting media. I am also very into fashion and jewelry collections, with some of my favorite stores being Gentle Monster, ÅLAND, Swarovski, and Vampire Freaks, so I love to stroll around the mall to watch people and buy new clothing. I am also into general collecting, mainly comics and vinyls. My main hobby in life is cosplay and prop making. I love dressing up as my favorite characters and parading around props that I have created, which allows me to show off my hard work.
The coolest thing I have done at Marywood so far…
is viewing the rotating art galleries we have on campus. It’s incredible to be able to walk across the street from my dorm and see a plethora of works done by different artists just on display in our buildings. Whether they are fellow artists at school or pieces that the collection owns, I get a boost of confidence and inspiration knowing that one day I’ll be able to display my artwork like this.

When I graduate…
I hope to find a stable job in a big city. Living in a large city your whole life makes you attached to that lifestyle, so I have no plans on leaving it any time soon. The goal is to pursue graphic design professionally and possibly freelance, working for any company that needs designers – however, I’m not opposed to settling down at a job if the pay is good! I would also like to continue doing cosplay and illustration as side hustles, as I have figured out a way to make an income from those hobbies as well.

What excites me most about art is…
the ability to express my thoughts and feelings through images rather than words. I have never been good at expressing myself or what I am feeling through words, so the fact that I can let the pen drive my hand and illustrate what I am feeling inside is a powerful thing. I also get a great deal of joy out of sharing my work with other artists online, creating friendships, connections, and bonds!

My art style resembles most closely to…
Adam Hughes and draw massive inspiration from him; a legendary comic book illustrator working under Marvel and DC. He’s known for his realistic style pin-ups of popular comic characters utilizing bold, almost cartoony line work while balancing it with beautiful, soft colors. I always find his work to be mesmerizing when I spot it on the shelves at my local comic book shop – It’s so eye-catching! I’d be lying if I said I didn’t get my line work style from him.

I hope you all enjoyed Marin’s art collection! I really enjoyed her mix of muted and vibrant colors in her digital works, along with their fantastical nature. I think this mix really pairs well with her passion for cosplay as well. While I don’t know too much about cosplay, Marin’s work has shown how much dedication is taken into account, and her attention to detail in her art projects show this as well. Have a great Easter break, zbohom!
