Student Spotlight: Sephora Charlot

Welcome back to another artist spotlight! I hope everyone got a bunch of well deserved rest this past Spring break. We are getting closer to the end of the school year, but that doesn’t mean artists stop their creativity. This week’s artist is someone who never ceases to amaze me with her creative illustrations and refined works. You might have seen her work around the Insalaco Center for Studio Arts, on this site, WhereCreativityWorks, or on her own website DoomedArts, this creative artist is….

Sephora Charlot

Major: Illustration

Minor: Animation and Graphic Design

Year: 2027

Clubs: Zeta Omicron, Kappa Pi

I am majoring in Art because

It’s what I’m good at and passionate about! Many people question why I chose this major since it’s so competitive, but so are other majors! I’d rather be competitive in something I know and am passionate about than something that I’m not! I also find art to be a way to tell stories, which is what I’ve always wanted to do as a kid!

What excites me most about art is…

What I can and what others can learn from it! I enjoy drawing different kinds of people, which means researching different ethnicities, religious practices, etc. In turn, I hope I could teach others about the reality that different people exist, and we should be open-minded about that!

The kinds of things that inspire me are…

Animated shows and Movies! Independent or big-name companies are always fun to watch, especially in the past few years with Spider-verse, Blue Eye Samurai, Arcane, and the Puss in Boots movie! I’m also inspired by comics/manga like Soul Eater and many online comics I find on places like Webtoons or Tumblr! One day I would love to create and publish my comic!

My favorite art class so far has been…

General Illustration with Prof. Steven Brower. I loved all the prompts for our assignments, and when we had to make a 2 page comic for the assignment, I got so excited that I made 8 pages instead! This assignment inspired a new story idea that I would love to publish!

When I’m not in class…

I’m usually doing work for my classes, hanging out with friends, drawing, or cleaning my room (I am a human tornado that cannot be tamed). I love working and staying busy but I have been blessed with friends who make sure I don’t work myself to death.

I would love to exhibit my art, make a mural, publish a comic, direct my own animated TV show, have one of my stories in a scholastic book fair (kind of specific but I loved those as a kid and I think it would be a nice full circle moment!) and many MANY more!

The coolest thing I have done at Marywood so far was…

Go on the NY Metropolitan Museum trip! It was so fun to go through the museum and appreciate all of the historical artifacts and art that the museum had to offer. It was so huge that I hope I can go back and appreciate certain exhibits. It was also really cool to just walk around NY and navigate the area and there was a park nearby that was great to walk around in and relax.

When I graduate…

I can’t seem to be able to choose one path, which is good because an artist probably isn’t going to have just one job for the rest of their life. I would love to exhibit my art, make a mural, publish a comic, direct my own animated TV show, have one of my stories in a scholastic book fair (kind of specific but I loved those as a kid and I think it would be a nice full circle moment!) and many MANY more! I find art careers to be very versatile and diverse, so I don’t really know what I’ll end up doing in the future!

A snack that would describe my artwork would be…

Macarons, I think! I like using vibrant colors and highlights, but I also use soft shading which reminds me of the softness of a macaron.

I hope you all enjoyed Sephora’s artwork! I really enjoy Sephora’s style as an artist and the vibrancy in each piece she creates. I also enjoy how much she incorporates culture within her works and it only furthers the impact of her work. When I first saw her work in our Foundations Seminar class with Prof. Sue Jenkins, I was taken aback with how refined and strong her craft was. I really look forward to seeing more of her work and concepts in the future. See you all next time, orevwa!
