Advanced Typography

Graphic design is so much fun and there is so much to learn. One thing that interests me the most is typography. This semester my favorite class was Advanced Typography, taught by Christine Medley, which really sparked my interest in typography. I loved practicing my hand lettering, doing letterpress, and finding solutions through type.

Here are some of my favorite projects from her class.

The first one is a letter press project we created at The Workshop in downtown Scranton. Letterpress is something I have never done before and immediately fell in love. I loved getting away from the computer screen and creating designs by hand, it was very therapeutic.

The second is a brochure we created for the Zaner-Bloser Penmanship Collection at the University of Scranton. This was especially fun because we learned a lot about the beginning of typography, the diverse styles and how they were created. The University of Scranton has a lot of really cool, old examples of this. It was fun to use those archives to create a brochure for their collection.

The third is a hand-lettering project we did. We got to choose a quote or song lyrics to hand letter. I choose a quote. I loved the freedom of choosing whatever we wanted to hand letter. I had a lot of fun with this project.

All in all, as this semester ends, I absolutely loved this class and cannot wait to take what I learned from this class into my future designs.
