Advertising and Illustrative Photography

This semester, I am taking ART-317B, Advanced Advertising and Illustrative Photography with Peter Nardone. So far, we have done three assignments, and I thought I would share some of them here! For each of these assignments, we tell a story by adding elements to them.

For this first assignment, we had to pick something that was reflective, so I used this bottle of Peach Crown Whisky. Before photographing, I filled the empty bottle with Brisk iced tea to look like whisky. I then added some fresh peaches to exemplify the flavor of the drink. In this project, I kept playing around with different angles until I was happy with the result.

For our next assignment, Peter assigned us each a subject to photograph and to take seven photos from it. He assigned me this little radio, so I used a black background to contrast with the light gray in the radio, and used diffuse lighting to make it softer and calmer.

Now, for our two most recent assignments, both of these are shoes. For the first project, Peter assigned us all the same shoe to photograph and used the softbox lighting directly over the shoe to create that seamless look and to have the light capture each corner of the shoe.

For the next project, we photographed our own shoes. I took a different approach for mine. I used the shoes on my feet as a model, so it was trickier to get the photo I wanted. I used a tripod and a self-timer on my camera, so it was a lot of trial and error.

Even though these are mainly inanimate objects, I enjoy being able to experiment more with lighting since I feel that I need more practice with it. Practicing with different ways of lighting will help my photography skills, and I feel that these will be good portfolio pieces.
