Headshot

“Embrace every opportunity to learn, experiment, and push your creative boundaries. Don’t be afraid to try new things, even if they’re outside your comfort zone—you never know what skills or passions you might discover.”

Hey everyone! Meet Maria Ryle, a 2016 Bachelor of Fine Arts Graduate in Graphic Design! Maria was not only a rockstar in graphics, but spent her time at Marywood playing field hockey, was a member of Zeta Phi Delta, and a member of the CMYK Club for graphic design and illustration majors and minors! Maria now is a graphic designer and small business owner. Maria has an impressive background and currently, owns her own company, Ryle Designs! Check out her instagram and website! Take a peek into Maria’s life and how she did what we all aspire to do, turn her side hustle into her full time job!

Why Graphic Design?

I’ve always had a creative mind and a strong preference for visual learning. In 9th grade, I took a computer graphics class, and from that moment, I was hooked. I continued taking graphic design courses throughout high school, which sparked my passion for design and ultimately led me to pursue a degree in graphic design.

How did your art education at Marywood help your career?

My art education at Marywood University helped me grow both technically and creatively as a designer. It gave me the confidence to showcase my design work with pride when applying to jobs, and the hands-on projects and critiques prepared me to talk about my work effectively during interviews. The rigorous curriculum challenged me to push my boundaries, and the supportive community helped me develop a strong portfolio that I’m proud to present to potential employers.

What was your favorite part about studying art at Marywood?

I loved the small one-on-one interaction you get at Marywood with your professors and classmates. My entire graphic design cohort was always willing to help someone else with creative feedback to help make them a better designer.

Exceeding the vision!

My career path has both matched and exceeded my initial vision. On one hand, it aligned with my goal of securing roles that allowed me to express creativity and push my skills in both print and digital design. On the other hand, it’s taken me in directions I hadn’t anticipated, but absolutely love. For example, I never expected to be building websites from start to finish, or to have opportunities that go beyond design. While working at Shokz (formerly AfterShokz), I not only served as a Graphic Designer but also became the team’s Asset Manager, which evolved into an Art Director role. I traveled across the country, collaborating with talented photographers like Matthew Hawthorne and Caleb Kerr for product photo and video shoots. I also got the chance to design full trade show booths for major events like the CES Convention in Las Vegas—experiences I hadn’t imagined when I first started out.

What is your favorite thing about your current job RYLE DESIGNS?

My favorite thing about my current job is how I turned what started as a side hustle, Ryle Designs, into a full-time career. Initially, I created Ryle Designs to generate side income, but over time I realized the potential to make it my main focus. After countless hours of balancing both my full-time job and my side business, my hard work paid off and I was able to transition Ryle Designs into my full-time job. It’s both challenging and rewarding. As a former collegiate athlete, I have a strong drive to win and constantly push myself to improve. Being my own boss allows me to channel that competitiveness, creativity, and passion into my business every single day.

Maria truly put the work in. She did her time working for others and gaining needed experience. She had her side business as a part time job for 4 years! For the past 7 months, she has been working full time for herself. This is what we all aspire to do, especially those of us in graphic design! Take a look at some of her talented and aesthetic work. In my opinion, she is the type of graphic designer who’s work I see on Instagram, and save for later for inspiration!

Side projects coming soon!

Although these side projects are now my full-time focus. I’m currently working on rebranding marketing materials for a popular baby product brand, though I can’t reveal the name just yet—I’m excited for the launch in 2025! In addition, I’m creating new websites for a diverse range of clients, including a wedding photographer, a doctor’s office, and an accounting firm. I’m also helping to rebrand all of United Way of Utah County’s marketing materials, which has been a rewarding and impactful project.

What are some of the biggest rewards in your career?

Some of the biggest rewards in my career include the unique opportunities I’ve had to travel the country and direct photo and video shoots, like for Shokz’s waterproof headphone, X-Trainerz. Another highlight was creating the entire branding for United Way of Central New York’s 100th Anniversary Gala. Additionally, designing logos and websites for clients that have significantly boosted their business and helped them thrive as their own bosses has been incredibly fulfilling. One of the greatest rewards, though, is achieving the freedom to leave traditional employment and become my own boss, running Ryle Designs full-time.

What is something that would surprise people about your day-to-day?

Something that might surprise people about my day-to-day is that no two days are ever the same. Each day brings new and exciting opportunities, from working on a variety of design projects to hopping on calls with current, new, and onboarding clients. While I work hard, I’ve also created a structure where my day revolves around my lifestyle, rather than the other way around. This flexibility is one of the biggest perks of being my own boss!

Creating an impact!

What inspires me most is the ability to create something that has a lasting impact, whether it’s for a brand, an individual, or a cause. Seeing my designs come to life and help others succeed motivates me to keep pushing boundaries. I’m also deeply inspired by nature—whether it’s spending time in the Adirondacks or at the beach—where I find clarity and fresh ideas. The creativity and passion of other entrepreneurs, along with the fulfillment of being my own boss, constantly drive me to grow. And my husband, Jake, is a huge supporter who encourages me to be the best version of myself.

Networking

As the small business owner of Ryle Designs, I would love for others to share my business with their networks. I’m always happy to talk to anyone about how I can assist them with their graphic and web design needs. Building connections and helping others succeed through design is what I’m passionate about!

Any advice for current art students at Marywood?

Build relationships with your professors and peers; their feedback and support can be invaluable. Also, start building your portfolio early and treat each project as a chance to showcase your best work. Lastly, stay persistent and patient. The road to a fulfilling career takes time, but the hard work and dedication you put in now will pay off in the long run. And while it’s important to think about the future, don’t forget to enjoy your time at Marywood—these truly are some of the best years and experiences you’ll ever have!

Thank you to Maria for sharing her life with us!

If I didn’t think Maria could get any cooler, when I asked her for a quote that she uses to keep motivated, she quoted a legend. I think that this quote can help all of us, especially after taking our finals and getting ready for the next semester.

“At the end of the day, you put all the work in, and eventually it’ll pay off. It could be in a year, it could be in 30 years. Eventually, it will pay off.”
