Hello!
If you’re anything like me, a massive fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender, then you were very excited when you heard of the release of the movie: Avatar Aang; The Last Airbender. The movie follows Aang and his friends many years after the end of the show. When on a journey to find a staff that Aang has learned can help bring back the airbenders, he sets out to find it. He instead ends up uncovering Tagah, an airbender from thousands of years in the past. Will Tagah help Aang in reviving the airbenders, or will he end up becoming a hindrance?
This movie came out in July and I finally had the time to watch it a few weeks ago. Almost immediately, I was blown away by the art and animation style. It has such a stark contrast to the original series which came out in 2005 (and honestly a huge animation quality contrast to many series today.)

The movie has improved lighting and it really fits the more serious tone of the movie. In the show, characters don’t come out and just state they’re going to kill someone. In contrast of that to the movie, killing comes up quite a few times in the movie, steering away from (mostly) any humor. Sokka still provides comedic relief, but that’s just a huge part of his character.
The line art in the movie is also a lot crisper than the series and it honestly makes sense why! For the series, they had to focus more on being consistent throughout each episode and couldn’t have episodes with quality higher than others. Being a movie, they were able to give lots of focus into each scene and really bring it to life.
Have you seen it yet? What did you think of it’s animation style?
