As I stated in earlier blogs, I am always searching for the light in photos. But what about the dark in photos? In our Basic Black & White Photography class, we are taught that the black is just as important as the light, or white, in photos. We learn to use tonal range to help develop the aesthetic feel to our photographs. One of the projects we had to do recently was called “The Dark Side.” I was so excited for this, so off I went. I spent all night cold, waiting for the moon to rise, so I could get some great night photographs! Afterwards, I was so excited that I went to school’s darkroom and spent the whole weekend developing film and processing photographs. In retrospect, I think I should have read the entire syllabus! As it turns out, “The Dark Side” my basic photography teacher was referring to was the ethical ‘dark side’! We all got a laugh out of that one. The teachers here at Marywood turned it into a positive learning experience. The class learned about taking pictures in limited light, and I learned to fully read the syllabus!
