Blind Character Design

Just concluded with my first official project in my Character Design class!

I am a third year illustration major at Marywood University. All my art classes are in the Marywood University Art Department. Part of my major requires me to take a variety of design classes; character design included. Thus far, I am having a blast in the class. I am finding it to be a very informative and insightful learning experience.

For our first project, each one of us had to pull a random character description out of a hat. Each character was from some form of literature; however, we had no prior knowledge of our chosen characters. We were then instructed to illustrate our own version of the character based merely on the description alone.

My Assigned Character Description:

Howl (Howell Jenkins)

Genre: Fantasy

“He was a tall, slim young man, with a flamboyant suit in blue and silver and long blond hair that shone like gold. His face was strikingly handsome– too handsome, really– and his expression suggested both arrogance and deep, dreamy distraction.”

Visual Cues: Glamorous, dramatic wizard with fashion-mag energy– part rock star, part mysterious sorcerer.

My Character Design:

Notes:

Influenced on “Glamorous”, “Arrogant”, “Handsome”, “Fashion”, “rock star”, and “Dramatic”.

Took inspiration from Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach.

WRAP UP:

Overall, this was a great experience. I was forced outside my comfort zone to design & illustrate something I was unfamiliar with.
