I chose Marywood because I was extremely interested in the art program because when I was thinking about which schools to apply to, I found that the Marywood art program was just what I was looking for.

I am majoring in Art because ever since I was a little kid I’ve loved drawing, to put it simply. While I am interested in other things like science and writing, I was always more drawn to art. I love seeing my own work grow and change, and taking art classes helps with this mission because not only do I actually learn how to create new things, I also get critiques which can be more helpful in some cases.

When I’m not in class, I’m usually doodling, or starting personal projects that may or may not ever see the light of day because I do love bouncing from project to project. For something not drawing related, I do enjoy reading, currently I’m reading Little Women by Louisa May Alcott! I also really enjoy looking at art books and studying how other artists create their works. In general I’m always keeping my eyes peeled for inspiration.

So far, my favorite art class at Marywood was…well, this is an extremely difficult question for me, as I’ve really enjoyed all my art classes so far, but I think Animation for the Illustrator would be my favorite. I love watching movies, so of course I’d also love a class where we study animated movies and take inspiration from said movies while working on our assignments. Overall it was a really fun class that was super helpful as it pushed me to experiment with different concepts.

The coolest thing I’ve done at Marywood so far was going last year on a field trip to the MET Museum in NYC which was extremely cool! I haven’t been to the MET before so it was so interesting learning about history through artworks because no matter when, what, or where, people will always have a drive to create something and that just amazes me, so I was so glad to have had an opportunity to go!

When I graduate I would love to have a job as a storyboard artist, or as an animator on a show or movie. One thing I learned over the past year though, which was encouraging, was that those aren’t the only two jobs I could go for as an illustrator. One that particularly caught my eye was illustrating the art for greeting cards, which I will definitely be keeping in mind as I always enjoyed looking at the designs while walking past the card isles in stores.

I’d recommend the Art program at Marywood because the classes are incredibly helpful when it comes to building up your skills as an artist, along with accepting critique which is crucial if you plan to have a career in art. Additionally, the professors are extremely welcoming and nice!
