Hope

Alisa Hope Sholly (Class of 2016)

Major: Spanish

Minor: Painting

I chose Marywood because Marywood was the only school that had both wonderful art and foreign language programs. The classes are small, so you get to know your professors really well.

I am majoring in Art because before attending Marywood University, I have always enjoyed art, but wasn’t sure which direction to go with it. I took a basic drawing class my first semester, and one professor suggested that I try painting. I had never really painted seriously before, but decided to try. I enjoy being a painting minor because it allows me to have a creative outlet. More importantly, though, painting is a huge challenge for me. It requires a huge amount of patience and practice.

When I’m not in class, I’m In my studio, doing homework, or hanging out with friends on campus.

My favorite class was basic drawing because I was taught basic skills and concepts that I had never learned before in high school art classes. I learned how to measure and draw angles. I was taught to think of the drawing as a composition. And, this class really prepared me for other more challenging art courses.

The coolest thing I’ve done so far was travel abroad to Spain and Italy with the University in order to study different cultures, see incredible art, and do a some painting.

When I graduate, ideally, I want to find a way to combine my interests in both Spanish and art, but I am still figuring out exactly what I want to do.

I’d recommend the Art program at Marywood because the professors at Marywood are great. Having a good professor for art especially, is extremely important. They help you know where and how you can improve, while being understanding to each person’s abilities, styles, and strengths.
