Matthew Shamnoski (Class of 2017)

Major: Sculpture

I chose Marywood because it offers the best art program in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area and has the most state of the art facilities to bring to life any one of my creative ideas to life.

I am majoring in art, simply put, because making art sustains me. Art allows for an escape, a voice, direction, and a lot of freedom. Creating is a reference, an homage, to a point in time, a thought or idea, feeling, person, or place.

When I’m not in class you’ll find me in the sculpture studio. I spend most of my time there to complete class work and some independent projects. A regular day for me consists of about 10+ studio hours.

My favorite class, thus far, would definitely be Sculpture II. I really did a lot of exploring and I came out feeling as though I had a much better handle on my personal style and creative direction.

The coolest thing I’ve done so far, through the many connections of my stellar advisor Bob Griffith, was attending the 30th year retrospective of renowned furniture designer and artist Robert Kuo.

When I graduate I would really love to peruse fashion design at Parsons: The New School in New York City. That truly is where my passion lies.

I’d recommend the art program at Marywood because it is full of creative thinkers, both on the student and faculty level. Marywood is most definitely well equipped to help you bring to life your wildest dreams of creation, and the intimate studio setting allows for a lot of individual attention and creative freedom.
