Creating A Scene

In all the time I’ve been creating art, I’ve always had one weakness: Backgrounds. I’ve spent so much time working on creating characters and neglected putting in time on creating backgrounds and scenes. I’m going to spend the rest of June and part of July working on making backgrounds and creating characters with a background to make a scene.

For one of my most recent pieces of artwork, I wanted to make a witch flying through the sky, but struggled figuring out what I could do to make the scene more interesting. One thing I learned after spending a few hours researching what others recommended, I found that a large piece of making scenes is context.

For this piece, I wanted to create a scene of a witch flying back to her home at the end of a day. I had first created the city wall and decided to add a sunset after messing around with multiple lighting sources and deciding that I liked having some back lighting the most.

For coloring this piece, I started with simple base colors and then used a water color brush for texturing. This is my first drawing where I tried out adding texture and I’m super content with how it turned out. It is definitely something I’ll be doing in future drawings, maybe with different brushes to find one that I really like.
