Recently, I have found myself working only with digital art. With the workload and rapid deadlines for each assignment, working digitally has been very helpful. I want to share some of the projects I recently completed and some progress drawings I am fond of.
Percy Jackson Musical
This was one of the projects that served as a practice for me to remember how to paint again in Procreate. We were assigned to create a musical poster for Percy Jackson, The Lightning Thief.
As always, I started with thumbnails, rough, and then gray-scaled , which led to the rest of the process. The coloring was quick, and I saved the details for only the essential areas. I wanted the poster to feel as close to the books of Percy Jackson. Therefore, I went for similar color schemes and a heroic pose. I stylized the waves and lighting as patterns close to the ones often found in my works. Overall, I wanted to keep a loose, painterly feel to this illustration.
Character sketches
Since I wanted to include these in my portfolio, I, quite frankly, over-worked myself on them. But, as you can tell, I have been enjoying this particular project. We were assigned to create a story and illustrate characters for it. I am still working on the expressions for the character, but I wanted to share some of the progress pictures and a few finished poses for my characters.
From here on, I realized that the desaturated color pallet I often reach for may not be ideal for this work. Since the media I chose was a children’s book, I wanted slightly more intense colors than my usual drawings. I also rendered the final poses to the art style I will commit to throughout the book.
Taag and Bobo
These two characters were the most enjoyable for me to work on. So far, I have completed their spread of poses and will now be working on the protagonist, Thuli. After playing with different layouts for them, I settled on these as my preferred ones. It was quite a challenge to draw the feline body, and I have still yet to be comfortable with the anatomy. Yet I am more nervous about the facial expressions I have to make for them, with only two days left until the critique…I hope I can complete them in time.
Thank you for reading!
