Dungeon Meshi Prints, Part 3

My third round of Dungeon Meshi prints did not go as well as the first two, but I learned some valuable information from it anyway.

Going in, my goals were to experiment with multicolored printing, maybe try a gradient, and use nicer paper. I went and bought a Strathmore sketch paper pad, thinking that it would probably work fine. Unfortunately, I don’t think it is giving the kind of finish that I want on these prints. I would like a lighter weight paper that is smoother, for a less textured finish. I didn’t end up trying gradients either, because I only have a tiny bench hook to roll out my ink on, and it seemed exhausting. Trying to print at home makes one feel especially grateful for the blessing of having access to a printing studio.

The main thing making these prints less successful however, is that I went way too hard on the rolling pin. I’m not sure if I was pressing too hard and squishing the linoleum or if it was shifting slightly as I rolled over it, but clearly something happened. So, I’ve learned my lesson with that. Rolling pins should be used sparingly.

I think standard printer paper might be the way to go, actually. I’ve used it once before, when I had nothing else, and it seemed to work well, although I’m no expert. I also think it would be cool to try printing the eyeballs in the four corners a different color than the rest of the border, so maybe I’ll think about that next.
