I pretty recently have taught myself how to embroider and I find it to be a really enjoyable form of 3D art. For all of my life before coming to Marywood University, any art I made was completely self taught; I saw something I wanted to do/make, decided I was going to figure it out, and then I did. Embroidery is one of those things.
I’ve seen a lot of different embroidery both in art and in clothes that I’ve really enjoyed. I liked watching the videos of people doing it and I loved the finished products. One day I decided that this was another thing that I could figure out how to do and then just do myself, why pay someone to make something for me when I can do it myself.
I started embroidering about a year ago and have really enjoyed it. I’ve made a couple of tiny pieces that I then modpodged onto canvass and I’ve also done some clothing pieces that I wear. It’s a really relaxing art form I like to do quite frequently. I’m able to relax with the tv on while I do it. It’s funny, sitting on the couch with a show on while I embroider makes me think of my grandma. She’s a very talented woman who knits, crochets, and cross stitches frequently. I’ve often gone over to her house and seen her sitting on her couch with a show own while she’s doing some kind of needle work. So every time I do it I just think about her and get this image in my head I’ll never forget. It always makes me feel closer to her and I think it’s a fun connection we will always have and that will always make me smile.
Some of the pieces I’ve done include a couple of New Jersey native flowers that I then modpodged onto a canvas, a Winnie the Pooh with a honey pot that I then modpodged into a canvas and gave to one of my best friends, a crewneck sweater that I put a Halloween stitch onto (that I often wear), and a pair of converse high top sneakers. I haven’t decided if I’m completely down with the converse or not yet however. Each one of these pieces I really enjoyed making and I hope to make a lot more. I also really like incorporating my art into all parts of my life and this is the best way of incorporating it into my style/clothes. I look forward to making a lot more.
