I’m feeling happy to be working with clay again! I spent time in the summer coming up with plans for what I wanted to make and I’m excited to start working on them. Day 2 I started making my first small Baba Yaga Hut. I knew that this time around I wanted them to be used as incense burners or candle holders so I made the roof a removable lid and hallowed out the windows and the chimney so light or smoke can pass through. I made the initial house shape from slabs and then added the texture as well as the windows, doors and chimney.
After that was the most time consuming part which is making the chicken legs and attaching them. I am still experimenting on what I want the legs to look like and how to also make them the most stable and not susceptible to breaking. I feel pretty good about the legs this time around, I think they are feeling sturdy and I also like the look of them. I’m hoping to make a mold soon so that I can make more of them quicker and experiment on the look of the hut.
Lastly I attached the legs onto the bottom of the hut. I use a leveler to make sure the house is even and not leaning or crooked. It takes a while for me to figure this part out. Now, The Hut is hanging out and drying, waiting to be bisque fired.

I love hand building and spending hours on the little details of things like textures. I just put on a podcast and go into creative mode and it is so relaxing. I can’t wait to make more variations of these and figure out how to work smarter not harder on the base so I can put all of my time into details and decoration. My next post will be when I’m glazing the piece! I have plans to glaze it similarly to how I did my first hut this time around. I have many ideas and I plan to work a lot this semester to get them done for my senior show. Next week I’m going to throw some cauldrons on the wheel and share about that. Until next time… <3
