It is bittersweet to cover up a painting that you may have spent a lot of time and effort creating but it is always for the best.

This painting came to be what it is now because it was a painting from last year that I was never really satisfied with so I decided to white it out. It is bittersweet to cover up a painting that you may have spent a lot of time and effort creating but it is always for the best. I don’t mind when the previous layers become a part of the new painting; it allows the surface to become more interesting.
After painting over this original with gesso I immediately started painting. I created these two forms that were sort of floating in the middle of the canvas. Even though they are flat I wanted there to be a sense of weight present. So suspending this form from the line going across the top just made sense to hold everything together in the painting.
This is the first painting I’ve made in a while that was stress free and just kind of happened. A few days before I made this painting I was reading about Robert Motherwell for my Contemporary Art History class and I feel like some of his work and writings may have influenced my painting. I didn’t exactly make this connection until after I was finished. Although I am glad that I did because it lead me to look up more of his work and also watched an interview with him speaking about some of his ideas and concepts.
