Well… the summer flew by! That said, I am beginning my third year as an Illustration major at Marywood University. As a part of my third fall semester, I am taking more art classes. The Marywood University Art Department offers a Character Design class each fall semester. I only had the class twice, but so far it has been a blast!
Character Design Class:
We meet Monday and Wednesday of each week from 6-8:30pm. For our first full class, we began studying and practicing gesture drawing.
We did not have any live models for this class. However, our professor had a website that would randomly show different models. Our professor would customize the allotted time we had for each gesture. Ranging from 10 minutes for our longer gestures, to as quick as 30 seconds.
This was a great exercise as it forced us to focus on the entire figure all at once. Oftentimes, myself included, we get caught up in the intricate details and lose sight of what we are actually illustrating.
While sketching the gestures, our professor told us to focus on three major things. The line of motion, position of weight, and negative space.

WRAP-UP:
Overall, I am excited with the start of the new semester! Furthermore, I cannot wait to see what else my Character Design class has in store.
