Getting Ahead With Glazing

Hi everyone! I hope you’re all doing well. These past couple of weeks have been a little all over the place, with fall break interrupting my workflow, but it was much needed! Seeing my family and taking time away from the studio helped me get some motivation back. So, let me show you what I’ve been up to since my last post.

First, I mentioned my test glazes in my last post, and I didn’t forget to take pictures to show you all the results. To be honest, I’m not super thrilled about them. Test number six looks pretty from afar, but it looks a bit strange up close. I want to test this one again, but with a thicker application. Same with test glaze number five, I actually like this one, but I think it needed a slightly thicker application. Then I’m really not sure what happened with test number seven, but it’s not what I expected at all. None of the results are horrible, but unfortunately none of them are super exciting to me. I’m going to test them again on the mini pots I threw and see if I like them better at a different thickness! Here’s what they look like:

Next, surprisingly, I’ve started glazing! Usually I push glazing to the last second, but this semester I wanted to get ahead of it so I’m not swamped by the end. It’s been a bit rough, but I’m really happy that I’m getting some pieces done! Here are some photos of a couple of pieces I’ve glazed, and hopefully I’ll have results for you all soon!

Lastly, I tested the lighthouse landscape I planned in my last post! I decided to test the design on one of my ornaments before committing to the whole jar. With underglaze, you can never know exactly what it’ll look like after firing, so I figured a test would save me any regrets! So, I’ll show you what it looked like before and after firing, with a clear glaze over the top. I love how it turned out, and I’m definitely going to go ahead with the jar. I’m going to adjust my application a bit, but I’m glad I have a sense of what my colors look like. I also want to paint a couple more ornaments with this design because I think they’ll sell well in my hometown!

Well, that’s all I have for this week! I’ve been glazing some other pieces, but I don’t have pictures, so I’ll wait until my next post to talk about them. I’m also hoping to start putting my ideas together for my senior show, so I’ll share those with you all soon, too! Thanks for reading, and stay creative, everyone 🙂
