Glaze Day

I glazed the rest of the pieces I made for the senior show this week! I am in the home stretch now! I’m the most excited to see how these turn out since I tried some new things like using the new chicken feet that I made a mold of this semester. I threw 2 larger cauldrons on my goal list of things I wanted to make. I’m happy with how they came out, one is Baba Yaga themed and for the other one, I sculpted a snake that wraps around it. Glazing is always the most stressful and exciting part for me because I never know exactly how they will all turn out. I made one more mini hut as well as a Kirby cauldron, although Kirby was mostly for me and I probably won’t have it in my show but man is he cute.

I am eager to see how my Ace of Cups wall hanging comes out. It is a piece that has taken a lot of trial and error. After all it took to make when I glazed it, I made a mistake that almost cost me the whole piece. I took the water drops hanging from the wire out when I glazed it, and since I wanted them to be blue but when I tried to get the wire back in, I realized that the holes I made had been filled with glaze and I couldn’t get them back in! After an hour of trying my best and some blisters later, I was finally able to get them back in place. I was so relieved since the water drops are my favorite part of it. Another obstacle I ran into was the hole I made in the back of the hand so that it could hang on the wall shrunk too much in the kiln and I could no longer fit any nails into it. With our ceramics studio technician, Mark Chuck’s help, I was able to Dremel (mini drill) out a larger hole so that it could still be hung. Overall, this piece caused me the most stress, but I think it will all be worth it in the end.

The waiting is the hardest part but soon I will know what the final pieces will look like, and next week we will start setting up for our senior show! I couldn’t be more excited! I feel like I have a lot of pieces that I am excited to share, and I also can’t wait to see what everyone else will have. It’s hard to believe that this is my last semester, but it is all starting to feel real now.

Editor’s Note: Sara can’t say this but I can: We used a photo of her work for the official postcard for senior show. Congratulations Sara!
