Back at the beginning of November, I went on a trip to the MET through Marywood’s art department. This was my fourth time and final year being able to take an art class that had a built-in field trip so I kept up with my personal traditions. When I travel to a new city, especially when I only get to be in it for a few hours, it’s important to me to capture the mood of the day and the general vibe of the city. Every year I buy a disposable camera to help me document the trip. As a kid when I had field trips in elementary and intermediate school, my mom would treat me to a disposable camera for the day and I’ve loved photography ever since. I think as a kid, I was more worried about using up all the film, than considering what shots I was taking. However, now as a senior in college, I love to pretend to be a photographer for the day. There’s something very nostalgic about the tradition but it also feels like honing my skills as a photographer (which I’m not).
While my first trip to New York will always be special, it was this year that the film photos impressed me the most. I was focused a lot on the solid parts of the city like the architecture but also the fluid parts of the city like the busy people. While I have never been to NYC when it wasn’t overcast and raining, I have a way of remembering the days very fondly. I would highly recommend adding a disposable camera to your packing list for trips, even if it’s only for a few hours. Below are more of my favorite candids I took last month, in no particular order. I love the way they turned out since I remember having a great time but also because I love them enough to frame and hang up in my room. I think I may be changing my mind about being a photographer and while I never plan to do it professionally, my skills can get better the more I travel the world.
