I Try To Change

This past week has been one of the most stressful of my college career. I think many of us have had a similar experience. In this blog post, I’d like to share some stuff I did this week, and what the past week has taught me about my time management skills.

Here’s what happened. I got sick last week, and that put me far behind on a lot. In theory, this wouldn’t have affected me as much as it did this week if I had managed my time properly and been decently caught up to begin with. I started off getting caught up on my work for my web design and general illustration classes. I got both done in time for the next day, but it was a struggle.

It felt like every time I miraculously finished an assignment on time, I had to immediately throw another one together for the next day. This coming weekend I’m going to actually get ahead on the stuff I need to have done next week. Thanksgiving break will be a godsend as well. I was fortunate enough to have a lot of leeway in Typography and Conceptual Design.

Our critique for the golden mean/armature project gave me a bit more time to get the metaphor project done. I was pretty happy with this painting of my cat I made for the armature project, but I’m not super proud of my final metaphor project. The typography assignment got pushed back a few times, which was good for me, because I have higher expectations for myself than what I currently have done. I’ll undoubtedly include that in my next blog post.

I glazed a lot of my ceramics pieces, which you’ll get to see once they come out of the kiln! I had to work quickly on those as well because of all the other projects I got done this week. That and the active shooter drill on Wednesday ate into my time a bit. I’m excited to get everything done though! On Thursday, I had to get my pieces ready for the Small Works Sale and Exhibition in the Mahady Gallery. That was extremely chaotic. The pieces had to be cast in wax and painted so that they look convincingly like bronze. I got them done in time… that and the punch, thank goodness.

None of my pieces have sold (yet) but that doesn’t surprise me. I’d like to list them in finished, bronze form with all their details on Etsy. Since they’ll be casts, I can sell as many pieces as people want. I’ll also likely use them in my house at some point, which is so super exciting to me!

So, overall, this week has been a lesson for me. If I had been ahead of my assignments, or caught up, in the very least, this week wouldn’t have been as stressful. I’m going to work to spend less time on my phone these next few weeks and see how my productivity improves. I’m hopeful that the rest of the semester will go smoothly. Then I can hopefully implement these changes going forward into next semester and be all the better for it. That’s all for now though!

More to come!
