Hey everyone! Hope you’ve had a great week! After selling out in Toronto and Chicago, it was recently announced that the Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit would be coming to New York City, and I’m so excited for it. It might seem cliche to say Van Gogh is my favorite artist, but I really love him so much. I even signed up for the pre-sale so I could get tickets ASAP!

The immersive exhibit allows you to experience Van Gogh’s post-impressionistic work in a brand new way. His pieces are animated and projected onto the walls and are accompanied by a soundtrack consisting of mostly classical music and sometimes modern music. The idea is to place the viewer into Van Gogh’s mind so that we can understand what it must have been like for him to paint as he did. I love the idea of feeling and understanding Van Gogh’s pieces in this way. I think it’ll truly put you inside of his mind.

The exhibit is made up of several stages that are not necessarily chronological. It begins with the paintings Van Gogh had done in his later life, and moves on to a series of yellow paintings – the color most associated with Van Gogh. The viewer then enters the Netherlands, where Vincent had grown up struggling to find his passions. It contains Van Gogh’s first painting The Potato Eaters.

As you can tell, the exhibit has circles on the floors to ensure social distancing, and they take every measure to ensure the safety of the visitors. What’s great about the immersive exhibit is that it doesn’t matter where you stand – you will be surrounded by Van Gogh’s masterpieces at all times. And the best part of it is… I have tickets! I’ll be going with my friends in late July (so expect a future blog post about it)! Now all I need to do is plan a trip to Amsterdam as soon as I can so I can go to the Van Gogh Museum.

I truly can not wait to go. Van Gogh has been my favorite artist since I was a junior in high school and read the book Vincent and Theo: The Van Gogh Brothers by Deborah Heiligman. It utilizes the letters sent between the two to show how the brothers loved and supported one another. To me, the book presented Van Gogh as a person just like anyone else, making him much more relatable. If you get the chance to read it, you definitely should! It’ll give you some more insight into who Van Gogh was and how he lived.
