Grab your cameras and let’s learn about lighting! This fall semester I am taking Lighting and Composition ART-317A with my instructor Peter Nardone. For the first week of the semester we have been learning about the difference between diffused and specular lighting. We started first taking pictures in the studio and then pictures outside.
Studio
In the studio we played around with the different lighting options that we have in our studio. We learned the difference between tungsten lighting to LED lighting and how to apply them. For these photos I used tungsten lighting for specular lighting and tungsten lighting with a diffusion panel for diffused lighting. Specular lighting had more sharp shadows and bright highlights while diffused has softer shadows and low contrast.

Outside Lighting
Now this is the same concept but different setting. For these photos I mostly had specular lighting with and without the diffuse panel. With the help of my friend Conchita Rivera, I took the photo and she helped holding the diffuse panel. Unfortunately I did not achieve diffused lighting so I will have to go back and take those photos.

Photojournalism
Moving on from lighting and now onto photojournalism. Along with Lighting and Composition, I am also taking Photojournalism ART-320 with Aimee Dilger. Our first exercise for this class was to take 100 photos of anything and edit 3 of our favorite photos. So for this project I got my friends, Julie Potter and Conchita Rivera to tag along with me to the annual La Festa Italiana celebration in Downtown Scranton. We walked around and tried to get candid shots of people at the festival and it was a great learning experience for us to take photos. This helped us get out of our shells and be more comfortable taking pictures outside of campus.

With this only being the second week of the semester, I have gained so much knowledge and experience and I’m excited to see what the rest of the semester has to bring!
