Literary Character (Design)

The past few weeks in my Character Design class, we have been working on sketching up some ideas for a character design based off of a description of a pre existing literary character! My character was Lady Mechanika, and her description stated “Her eyes glowed with amber fire, set against porcelain skin and dark rouge lips. she wore a tailored corset and leather trousers, adorned with brass buckles and belts that held tools and weapons. Her arms were mechanical, intricate clockwork marvels.”

At first, we did some small thumbnails, and I moved onto to two designs I leaned towards while I was drawing!

I had so much fun taking the design in two different directions, and my final one ended up ended up leaning towards the first one, with some influences from the second one.

The final design! I took influence from Victorian ink illustrations for the texture of the dress! I had so much fun working on this design, and I think it’s a super good exercise to take a character and reduce them only to a description and only work from that to create a new design for them! It’s a very fun challenge.

I hope everyone’s midterms went well, and I hope you had a lovely fall break!
