Pictographs, Pictograms, and an Emoji

Last week in my Intro to Graphic Design class with Prof Sue Jenkins we had a project where we had to create three pictographs, two pictograms, and one emoji! I had a lot of fun with this assignment.

Pictographs are small icons that are used to very simply communicate something with no words needed. For example, picture a sign with a burger and drink with a large x over it to signify you aren’t allowed to bring food to that area. For mine I chose to go with pets, a dog, a cat, and a little fish!

For our pictograms, we needed to show someone or something in action, and as soon as I heard we needed someone in action my mind automatically went to Sportacus from the tv show Lazytown! I mean, the guy never stops moving so he was perfect for this!

As you could see on the last image, my little isopod friend crawled over onto my pictograms so he’s extremely excited to be here. For my emoji, I chose an isopod! I love those little guys and I would personally be using that emoji constantly so I thought he would be a fun choice.

Overall, I had a super fun time with this project, and it was a really great way to figure out how to simplify things to make them work as icons!

I hope everyone has a wonderful next week!
