Hi friends! I hope everyone is doing great and enjoyed their Halloween weekend!
This week, in my History & Theory of Art Therapy class, our class learned about the humanistic approaches to art therapy. With that knowledge in mind, we were instructed to create a piece of art which depicts a chosen polarity. Our options included: good and bad, strong and weak, loving and angry, and dependent and independent. I chose to paint a canvas that represents independence and dependence. I began by taping off a straight line down the circular canvas, but putting the line off center so one side is larger than the other. I then determined that the right side, painted my favorite shade of blue, would represent my dependence in life. On the left side, I painted my favorite shade of orange, which represents my independence in life. The orange side being larger than the blue side is meant to represent my fight for independence and my winning of that fight. With this part of my identity in mind, I reflected on how hard it has been for me to gain independence and the challenges that I’ve gone through and still go through. Next, I took shades of blue and used a paint knife to scrape them along the canvas. Each shade represents something important about depending on others. I did the same on the orange side, using the different shades to represent important aspects of being independent.
Overall, I thought this was a really interesting art therapy directive and I am super happy with how the final piece came out.
That’s all for today, friends! I hope you enjoyed reading!

Love the piece you created and your story of Independence ❤️
Great explanation of a really cool piece!
