Preserving The Past

I got a summer job at DPNR, which stands for Department of Planning and Natural Resources. I’m working in their library and archives division and honestly at first I didn’t really know what to expect. I’ve been here for about two weeks now and I love it!

Currently I’m stationed in the archives department where I sometimes work with material dating back to the late 1700s. If you got a chance to read my last post, It’s Carnival Baby!, you know that the US Virgin Islands were sold to the United States from Denmark in 1917. In the archives I’ve found artifacts from when these islands were under Danish Colonial rule, it’s pretty cool stuff!

History is my first love! Well, my second, first love…is that even a thing?? Anyway, the point is I absolutely love history! Since I’ve been working here I’ve noticed that history is slowly fading away, which is sad.

There must be people to preserve this information, or it will be lost, and that is one of my biggest fears. See, I believe you must know where you come from to know where you’re going. And so I have a new found love and appreciation for archivists and the work that they do. They preserve the past and that’s a pretty big deal!
