Sketchbook Practice!

Hello! I hope you guys are having a great start of the year! For this post I’d like to share some pages I’ve worked on in my sketchbook over winter break. I’ve always had a difficult time trying to think of what to draw in sketchbooks, but I like to approach it by determining if I would like to refine or practice a skill, or explore and exercise my creativity.

Over the break, I wanted to practice drawing using a more realistic style. So picked my doggo Rudy as a subject and just practiced drawing him, I tried to draw him in different angles and positions. Some of them turned out better than others and that’s ok! I learned a lot from the repetition and had a lot of fun doing it.

After Christmas I wanted to experiment with some of the new materials that I got. So I took out some of my new Prismacolor pencils and Grabie Acrylic paint markers and had fun. I love Primsacolors for their soft feel and because they are so easy to blend with. The Grabie Acrylic markers were perfect to layer on top to and add highlights and embellishments to the drawings. I also tried to see how each of the different mediums worked on different types of paper.

Sketchbooks are a place to experiment and have fun. For me, it can be so intimidating to stare at a blank page and try to think of the perfect layout and art piece to put on it. I’m trying to learn to relax when working in my sketchbook, and the only way to do that is practice more 🙂

Thank you for reading!
