Student Spotlight: Caroline Flynn

Happy New Years everyone and I hope everyone got their well deserved rest this past holiday season! This week’s artist includes a creative designer who also has a great eye for photography. I first met this artist in my Basic Photography class and her compositions always caught my eye. This capturing artist is…

Caroline Flynn

I am majoring in Art because

I love to be creative. I have always had a very vivid imagination, creating things and repurposing household items. I honestly thought of doing many other things during middle and high school like going to culinary school or becoming a teacher, but the more I did art the more I fell in love with my creative side.

What excites me most about art is…

the different ways that creativity can be expressed in everyday life. I have an outlet through baking, but there are also different mediums that I like to use like painting, sculpture, and photography. But I also love to work with my hands, and I like how hands on art is, you make it with your hands and through that I learn as much as I can.

The kinds of things that inspire me are…

the people around me, my family and friends.  They inspire me so much because they are always behind me and encouraging me with everything I do, that propels me to always do my best. I also like to get my inspiration from nature, being from rural Vermont and always being surrounded by beautiful sights, it inspires me so much to create things that are as pretty as that.

My favorite art class so far has been…

my Digital Design class I took with Prof. Sue Jenkins in my first semester here at Marywood University. I was very new to Adobe programs so that class taught me so many valuable things, techniques, and shortcuts that I have used so many times since. I like the variety of pieces we made in that class like self portraits, soda cans, and gift tags. I learned how to more effectively use the tools in Illustrator and Photoshop.

When I am not in class…

I work at Lynn Sandy’s Bakery in Scranton. It is a small bakery, I just started there at the beginning of the semester, but I have been having so much fun there.  I have always had a love for baking and in 7th grade I even started my own cookie business that I still have to this day. I even worked for a small bakery in high school as well. I feel like baking and decorating helps so much with my art because I can still be as creative as I want to but it’s a different medium that is fun and interesting.

The coolest thing I have done at Marywood so far…

has been being the president of Zeta Omicron, Marywood’s chapter of the Kappa Pi International Art Honor Society. At first it was intimidating coming in as a sophomore and to be honest it is still a little intimidating. But I also have had fun coming up with fun crafts to do and to be a part of something bigger than myself. It has taught me valuable lessons like how to send emails correctly, how to address a group of people, how to set up a group art exhibit, and many other things that I know will help me in the future.

When I graduate…

I would like to move a little closer to my family, most of them are in Vermont and Massachusetts, but I haven’t fully decided what I want to do with my degree or with my life quite yet.  The most logical thing is to go into marketing or something along those lines, but I’ve always found book design an interesting avenue. Right now I am trying to live in the moment, do the best I can, and graduate with the best possible chance to do as best I can in life.

A holiday symbol that would represent my artwork would be…

a gingerbread house because I like when my art is very structured yet there is an element of fancy decorations and sweetness to it.

Check out some more works by Caroline!

I hope you all enjoyed Caroline’s creations! I especially enjoyed her take on the Inside Out movie logo and how minimal her elements are. Have a great rest of the break and can not wait to see everyone’s works once the campus opens up again, Ciao!
