Student Spotlight: Conchita Marguerita Xin Zhen Rivera

Helloooooo readers! Sephora here and as I’m typing this post midterms are next week! So I’ve been doing a lot of writing and reading lately which is always fun (I’m struggling to write coherent sentences in my essays, send help).

So let’s get into this week’s student! She is an amazing photographer with a beautiful name! Let me introduce you to…

Conchita Marguerita Xin Zhen Rivera

A freshman Photography major, Conchita embraces change and explores different topics in her work!

Major: Photography Studio Arts

Graduation Year: 2027

I am majoring in Art because…

Of its ability to evolve over time and being able to change between different topics. As a person who enjoys change every now and then, I think it’s important to be able to cover multiple topics within your chosen medium. Like photography, while I enjoy doing mostly nature and wildlife, I understand the need to be comfortable with doing portraiture and studio work as well.

The kinds of things that inspire me are…

Music, human emotion, nature.  Music allows me to completely focus on my shoot and slow down to observe. While nature can be overwhelming to shoot, using music to focus and find the perfect shot inspires me to find the smaller hidden aspects of the whole scene or see a completely different point of view. Human emotion inspires me as I can invoke certain emotions just by the change of light or composition. For example, warm bright hues can make a person feel happy, cozy, or free.

My favorite art class so far was…

Color photography because of its ability to create a deeper understanding and use of color within photography. I used to shy away from the use of a lot of color because it almost intimidated me. Being in the class now and pushing me out of my comfort zone makes me feel more confident in finding and using color to my advantage

When I am not in class…

I am either studying in the Learning Commons enjoying a cup of coffee, taking photos, in my room drawing, or binging a current favorite show (My Demon on Netflix has been a favorite thus far).

The coolest thing I have done at Marywood so far was…

working in the darkrooms for my photography classes and working with film cameras. Learning and doing a whole new process to me has been very eye-opening. It has taught me more patience and the importance of pre-visualizing when I am taking photos on a film camera.

When I graduate…

I hope to continue to pursue this career under a bigger company like National Geographic or be able to do some freelance photography.

I would recommend the Art program at Marywood because…

of the vast knowledge the art professors hold and are able to give insight on your own work to improve. Students are able to practice in different mediums and types of art from sculpture, painting, or photography! The Art program at Marywood has a lot of accredited art programs to offer for those who do want to pursue art as a full-time career

What excites me most about Art is…

How expressive an artist can be. Art reminds people to appreciate something and the thoughtfulness behind art in general. It also allows people to connect in different ways.

Here is some gorgeous photography from Conchita!

I hope you all enjoyed learning about Conchita and her wonderful view on photography and art as a whole! From exploring different topics to using music to allow her to focus, Conchita truly has a passion for photography!

Thank you all for reading this week’s post, excuse me while I proceed to devour some ramen.

Sephora, out! <3
