Hello again! This week we have painting major, Genevieve Walker. Genevieve’s self portrait, “Pumice,” is currently in the show, “Wage On! Women, Art, and Money” in New York City. The 36″ x 36″ oil painting “explores the daily struggle women face when polishing one’s abrasiveness in order to soothe societal norms of femininity.” The show, organized by the Women’s Caucus for Art, features 20 self identified female artists. It is at Ceres Gallery in Chelsea and runs until February 25th, 2017.
Meet Genevieve
Name: Genevieve Walker, Class of 2017
Major: Painting
I am majoring in Art because: I cannot imagine studying any other field. It’s a funny feeling dedicating your life to something that you have always adored since childhood. I started painting about ten years ago, and I haven’t been able to stop since. I was also a very bizarre child so it worked out nicely.
The kinds of things that inspire me are: The strong relationships in my life, whether it be with my family, friends, or peers. I think it’s important to continually learn about different things, even if they don’t pertain to your major. Keeping an open mind is the best recipe for inspiration.
My favorite class so far was: Printmaking. Something about the process captivated me. I’d have to also mention the Visual Concepts class I am currently taking. It employs creative problem solving, which applies to all majors and not only the Arts. Just. Not. Math.
When I’m not in class: When I have any free time, I am painting in my studio, or thinking about how I should be painting in my studio. I read a lot, and have mastered twenty-minute naps.
The coolest thing I’ve done so far was: I went to the New York Art Book Fair this past year and I wanted to set up a tent and settle down for life. It is this massive three day event at the MoMA PS1 that’s chock full of art books and vendors. I collect books of all sorts, so I was in my element.
When I graduate: I will hopefully be a few steps closer to figuring out my daunting future. Hopefully. But for now, I am focusing on applying to Graduate MFA programs and some residencies around the country.
I’d recommend the Art program at Marywood because: It has an extremely supportive and collaborative environment. The students are genuinely interested in each other’s growth, rather than competition. That has certainly helped me grow as an artist, student, and person. The professors are all unique and singular in their own ways, and I consider myself lucky to have them as mentors.
Some of Genevieve’s Work:
Thank you for sharing your work, Genevieve, and congratulations on the show!
Until next time!
