Student Spotlight: Jorge Ariza

Hello everyone! This week we will be talking to a graduate student named Jorge Ariza. I found out about Jorge’s work on his instagram, and instantly knew we had to feature him!

Meet Jorge!Jorge Ariza

Name: Jorge Ariza Class of 2019

Major: Graphic Design MFA

I am majoring in Art because… I’ve always had a passion for it since I was child. I started drawing at a young age and started to develop those skills throughout time and I knew that I wanted to art for a living.

The kinds of things that inspire me are…
The NY skyline, Instrumental Jazz music, seeing at what other people are working on.

My favorite class so far was… Children’s Book, I like going crazy when it comes drawing and coming up with different ideas to illustrate a story. Currently I’m in the process of doing a Children’s Book Series for my thesis.

When I’m not in class… I’m always working on something different busy it’s working on a new illustration or a design project, developing my other skills.

The coolest thing I’ve done so far was… So far it would have to be going to the MFA Study Tours, getting to know a different city each semester and exploring the different museums and studios  getting to hear from other artists/designers.

When I graduate… I hope to be working in NYC as a designer/illustrator, it’s always been my goal/dream to work there and I’m in the process of making it happen. Hopefully in the further future, I want to teach in the university level and spread my knowledge to the younger generation.

I’d recommend the Art program at Marywood because… The faculty are really amazing and encouraging, getting exposed to a lot of material and I like the assignments that are challenging to help me think more creatively. I feel like I learned a lot in one semester than I did in my undergraduate.

Who is your favorite artist and what about them inspires you the most?

My favorite illustrator would be King Jung Gi, because he has similar style of illustration and does his work with any photography. My favorite graphic designers would be Aaron Draplin, for his unique and simple designs and the way he markets himself in his Pop-up Shops. Another favorite is Paula Scher, for her use of typography, from logo designs for corporate companies and her poster designs for Public Theater.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with us Jorge! Make sure to check out his other work on his instagram! Until next time, stay creative!
